About these data

This page contains a range of data that the LSC has. It represents information that we are most regularly asked for. In order to allow equal access we are publishing it on this website.

We will publish all data relating to legal aid on this website. We will expand the current criminal sections to include Crown Court data shortly.

Police station data

You can view costs information for each police station where a claim was made between April 2005 and March 2006. The police stations have been grouped together into their constituent criminal justice areas.

These data are useful for understanding average costs at the named police stations against the overall average for that police station. They can help provide information about local markets.

All individual police stations are split by region. Each station has three tables showing:

Magistrates’ court data

You can view costs information for each magistrate court where a claim was made between April 2005 and March 2006. The courts have been grouped together into their constituent criminal justice areas.

These data are useful for understanding average costs at the named magistrates’ courts against the overall average for that court. They can help provide information about local markets.

All magistrates’ courts are split by region. Each court has two tables showing:

Duty Solicitor scheme data

You can view lists of Duty Solicitor schemes and the names of participating firms across England and Wales. It represents information that has been recently asked for under the FOI Act 2000. In order to allow equal access we are publishing it on this website.

Duty Solicitor Schemes are split by the LSC regions. Each scheme has two tables showing:

  • Table 1: the Police Station Scheme and the names of participating law firms in this scheme
  • Table 2: the Court Scheme and the names of participating law firms in this scheme.

    This information is intended to aid an understanding of the average costs of legal aid cases, and to help inform responses to the current consultation on the Carter proposals: Legal Aid: a sustainable future.
